8 PH airports get on-time star ratings from UK firm

Eight airports in the Philippines earned On-Time Performance star ratings in the latest reports released by the Official Aviation Guide, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines announced on Thursday.

OTP star ratings were given to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila and provincial airports in Iloilo, Tacloban (Leyte), Davao, Laguindingan in Cagayan de Oro City, Bacolod, Kalibo in Aklan and Puerto Princesa in Palawan, the 2016-2017 OAG reports showed.

CAAP chief information officer and spokesperson Eric Apolonio said the United Kingdom-based OAG is an air travel intelligence company that provides digital information and applications to the world’s airlines, airports, government agencies and travel-related service companies.

“OAG is best known for its airline schedules database, which holds future and historical flight details for more than 900 airlines and over 4,000 airports,” Apolonio added.

OAG also operates in the United States, Singapore, Japan and China.

The OTP star rating, according to Apolonio, is designed to benchmark against set criteria defined by industry and flight status information experts. He said OTP is measured across the whole year based on 12 months’ rolling performance.

To achieve an OTP star rating, the world’s airlines and airports must meet two criteria: all airlines and airports must have a minimum of 600 operations a month (minimum of 2.5 million departed seats), and OAG must receive flight status information for no less than 80 percent of scheduled flights within a 12-month period.

NAIA was recently excluded from the list of worst airports in the world based on the latest survey conducted by online travel site Guide to Sleeping in Airports.

Four other airports in the country — Iloilo International Airport, Mactan-Cebu International Airport, Clark International Airport, and Davao International Airport — were again listed in the top 25 best airports in Asia for 2017.

The travel site explained the results were based on the overall airport experience of travelers. It ranked the overall experience based on these factors: Comfort (Gate seating and availability of rest zones); Services, facilities and things to do; Food options; Immigration/Security; Customer service; Cleanliness; Navigation and ease of transit; and Sleepability.

NAIA used to be among the world’s worst airports in the same survey landing in fifth place.
