THE Makati City government managed to save P108.72 million in garbage hauling costs in 2016, according to the Commission on Audit.

Based on an audit report, Makati’s effort to adopt solid waste volume reduction resulted in the decrease of its garbage hauling expenses from P446.523 million in 2015 to P337.807 million last year, or a 24.35-percent drop.

It was also a 10-year low based on the city government’s financial statements submitted to the CoA dating back to 2007.

The city’s yearly disclosure on the costs of environment/sanitary services showed Makati paid P337.807 million in 2016, PP446.523 million in 2015, P445.561 million in 2014, P440.157 million in 2013, P424.168 million in 2012, P419.115 million in 2011, P404.625 million in 2010, P389.406 million in 2009, P407.608 million in 2008 and P372.028 million in 2007.

CoA credited the intensive pro-environment programs, including urban greening, waste reduction and diversification program, enforcement of the solid waste management code on segregation and the observance of annual events, such as earth month and environment month, to the city’s cost-savings of its garbage cost.

Makati was also cited for its “Basura’y bawasan, balik-gamitin at baguhin ang anyo sa Pasko (3B sa Pasko)” giving incentives to residents making creative products from recycled materials.

The city government attributed its partnership with the Liga ng mga Barangay and the Makati environment cooperative or the Kapisanan ng mga Junkshop Operators sa Makati for the sustained implementation of segregation and waste recovery program.
