Vice President Leni Robredo has formally assumed the chairmanship at the Liberal Party, telling party-mates that “it’s time to work, go back to our roots.”

She called on fellow LP members to help rebuild the organization, telling them to return to the “true essence” of the party as the voice of the people.

Last Aug. 10 at the party’s national executive council meeting, the LP named Robredo as its chairperson.

She thanked the LP for its all-out support in her first year of office.

“There are so many things to be thankful of. There will be challenges, but we can hurdle them all,” she said.

Meanwhile, Senator Francis Pangilinan was named the LP president.

In her remarks, Robredo reminded party stalwarts that their work to rebuild the party must begin now even amid the setbacks of the past year.

“Gone are the days of restlessness, isn’t it? We rested for a year since we have to give in for the transition. But now, it’s time to work. It’s time to rebuild the party,” she told LP members and and the party’s sectoral representatives.

She pushed for a “healthy balance between politicians and non-politicians” while underscoring  that the core principle of the party is to represent the people.

The ordinary Filipinos are the “true voice of democracy,” and urged LP stalwarts to uphold this tenet moving forward, she called on.

Despite LP’s presidential standard bearer Mar Roxas’ loss in the presidential race in2016 and the consequent reduction in the party’s membership, Robredo said the fight was not lost, especially as LP returns to its roots.
