Institutions score well in poll

MANY Filipinos remain satisfied with the “good” performance of key government institutions a year after the Duterte administration took power, according to the results of the latest Social Weather Stations survey.

The Senate outdid all the other government institutions in the poll despite a one-grade drop from the previous quarter.

Two House leaders, meanwhile, said Wednesday the rising approval and trust ratings of President Rodrigo Duterte indicated he still enjoyed an overwhelming support from the public.

“The results only prove that the Duterte administration remains resolute despite various controversies,” Rep. Robert Ace Barbers said on the latest Pulse Asia survey results.

Rep. LRay Villafuerte said Duterte’s high public approval and satisfaction ratings were proof of his tough and non-traditional style of governance.

“Despite all the noise  and the stinging attacks against President Duterte’s  style of governance and  his strongly worded policy statements and speeches,  an overwhelming majority of Filipinos appreciate and approve of his unique brand of decisive leadership,” Villafuerte said.

The Second Quarter 2017 Social Weather Survey, conducted among 1,200 respondents, showed that 64 percent of those polled were satisfied with the Senate’s performance, while 15 percent said they were dissatisfied with it.

The net satisfaction with the upper chamber was at a “good” +49, which is one grade down and three points below the “very good” +52 rating in March.

As for Duterte’s cabinet, 52 percent of those polled said they were satisfied and 18 percent were dissatisfied, yielding a “good” +34 net satisfaction rating that was two points above the “good” +32 in March.

Some 53 percent were satisfied and 20 percent were dissatisfied with the House of Representatives, which logged a “good” +34 net satisfaction rating or a five-point drop from +39 in March.

Finally, the Supreme Court suffered a two-point decline in the second quarter with a net satisfaction rating of a “good” +38 from +40 in March, with 55 percent of those polled satisfied and 17 percent dissatisfied.

The latest survey, conducted from June 23 to 26, had sampling error margins of ±3 percent for the national percentages.

Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said the survey showed that the members of Duterte’s Cabinet “follows after the work ethic of the Chief Executive: Proactive, hard-working and compassionate towards the disadvantaged and marginalized.”
