FESSAP Regional 7 director takes oath

CEBU CITY—Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines president David Ong formally swore in former basketball star Julian Algoso Macoy as its Regional 7 Director during a ceremony held at the Allure Hotel in Metro Cebu.

Also in attendance to witness the oath-taking was Alvin Tai Lian, FESSAP Chairman of the Board, and University of Cebu’s Atty. Baldomero C. Estenzo, who is the FESSAP Assistant Corporate Secretary.

Highly recommended by Estenzo, Macoy is a product of the University of San Carlos.  

Macoy, in his oath, vowed to enter into the performance of his duties and responsibilities “in accordance with the highest ethical standards of governance  in the promotion, development and supervision of sports throughout the region, and in the entire country; collaborate and coordinate with the colleges and universities with regard to the National Student Championships and Philippine University Championship and in other cases, including the Philippines’ participation in any international championship; control and govern all competitions among FESSAP-affiliated university league-organizations, which colleges/universities/clubs teams are taking part; coordinate with the FESSAP Executive Board regarding Philippine participation in all International University Sports Federation (FISU)-accredited championships and tournaments; and engage in any other activities that are necessary, beneficial or incidental to achieve FESSAP’s goals and objectives, with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities pertaining thereunto.”

Born on Jan. 28, 1940, Macoy grew up in Cebu and graduated from the University of San Carlos with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Commerce, majoring Banking and Finance. He starred for the USC Warriors’ varsity team for four years and established a Philippine collegiate record for most points in a single game in 1958 when he tallied 126 points against CSAT in the old Cebu Collegiate Athletic Association, the forerunner of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. or CESAFI.

In 1960, Macoy moved to Manila to play for Yutivo in the old Manila Industrial Commercial Athletic Association.  He saw action with the Opels for 10 seasons before dislocating his right hip in 1968.

In 1971, Macoy migrated to the United States and worked for four different companies before he landed a job with the United States Postal Service.  He worked with the postal service for 24 and a half years before he returned home in 2004.

In 2004, Coach Joe Lipa hired Macoy to be one of his assistant coaches on the Philippine national team that saw action in an Asian tournament in Tehran, Iran under the auspices of the traditioned-steeped Basketball Association of the Philippines.

In 2007, he was back in Cebu, working as the CESAFI deputy commissioner under commissioner Felix ‘Boy’ Tiukinhoy Jr. for four years before he grabbed the opportunity to coach for his alma mater, USC.  To date, he remains a team consultant for the school.

Of late, Macoy helped organize a a grassroots basketball tournament in Cebu, a program that was started by Governor Hilario Davide of the Cebu Province. Graham C. Lim
