The Energy Department has identified ideal locations to ensure optimal generation of new power plants to meet 43,765 megawatts in additional capacity by 2040.

“We have already indicated the ideal locations of needed generation capacities, after considering all the important factors,” Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said in a recent forum.

Cusi said Luzon had several ideal locations for new power plants.  These include a 50-MW facility in Bay, Laguna; 50 MW in Lumban, Laguna; 300 MW in Muntinlupa;  300 MW in Malaya, Rizal; 50 MW in Labo, Camarines Norte; 50 MW in Naga; and 50 MW in Daraga, Albay.

Cusi said ideal locations in the Visayas include a 100-MW power plant in Compostela, Cebu; 100 MW in Mactan, Cebu; 100 MW in Corella, Bohol; and 50 MW in Calbayog, Northern Samar.

“And for Mindanao, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat and Agusan del Sur are ideal sites,” the energy chief said.

These include a 100-MW plant in Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur; 100-MW plant in Sultan Kudarat in Maguindanao; and a 100-MW facility in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

“Hopefully, with ‘Duterteconomics’ attracting the adequate level of private investment, we can reach our targeted additional power capacity by year 2040 of 43,765 MW,” Cusi said.

The department set a 70-percent baseload, 20-percent mid-merit and 10-percent peaking requirement for power generation.

“This is the so-called 70-20-10 ideal proportion…It is the ideal mix targeted by the administration as part of its inclusive growth agenda in the energy sector,” Cusi said.

He said the exploration and use of indigenous sources of energy like renewables, fossil fuel and alternative fuel would continue as a matter of policy.

“And in this age of rapidly developing technology, we will even encourage the entry of clean, efficient and smart technologies in the market,” Cusi said.
