WHILE swimming pools and landscaped gardens bring out the resort ambiance in every DMCI Homes condominium complex, part of its amenities is a basketball court with a special purpose of promoting neighborliness through sports.

The Quadruple A property builder doubles that closeness up through its summer basketball tournament.

“DMCI Homes is not only in the business of building structures but building communities,” said Pia Tumbocon of DMCI Homes when she recently opened the 2017 DMCI Homes Communities Basketball tournament at the company’s basketball gym in Makati City.

Tumbocon, who is the tournament’s commissioner, told players and coaches from the different DMCI Homes communities participating in the basketball competition, that the company sponsors various activities for homeowners like the yearly basketball tournament to make their DMCI Homes experience even more wonderful.

Professional cager Jai Reyes, who plays in international basketball leagues and was a former PBA player and member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles champion team in the UAAP in 2008 and 2009, gave another perspective when he spoke as guest speaker at the ceremony.

“You are so lucky with DMCI Homes because they have this kind of tournament and venue to showcase your talent,” Reyes said.

Reyes told players to work hard to achieve their dreams and play safe during the tournament to avoid injury.

“Don’t forget your studies because we’re students first before athletes,” he reminded student athletes.

Under the tournament format, there is a junior division for players up to 16 years old and a senior division for players aged 17 and above.

The different DMCI Homes communities in Metro Manila were grouped into five areas. Area 1 represents communities in the north; area 2 for Acacia Estates, DMCI Homes’ township development in Taguig City; and Area 3 for residences in the south. On the other hand, Area 5 covers eastern Metro Manila while Area 6 constitutes the Pasig City area.

The participation of ex-PBA player Marlon Basco, who is with the Area 6 team, and former UST Growling Tiger Carmelo Afuang, who is with the Area 2 team, made the tournament more exciting.

DMCI Homes spiced up the tournament with a 3-point shootout contest before the initial games were played. Francisco Tancioco, last year’s senior division Most Valuable Player and a member of the defending champion team representing Acacia Estates in Taguig City, won the shootout among senior contestants. Prince Kyle Reyes from the Area 6 team was the best three-point shooter among junior contestants.

Another sidelight of the tournament is a basketball clinic Reyes will conduct at Acacia Estates starting on May 8 to 12. All teams will play against all other teams within their division to reach the Final Four. The top two teams in the semis advance to the championship round. Cash prizes and trophies await the top three teams with the champion taking home P50, 000 cash.

As residents and their children hone their skills in the game in the court, they also develop friendship and camaraderie making them a close-knit community. The tournament’s theme of unity, camaraderie and victory sums up that benefit.

Known for building high quality, best value homes and resort-inspired communities that promote quality lifestyle among Filipinos, DMCI Homes has been holding team sports competitions to foster closer community ties and encourage camaraderie, unity, and sportsmanship among residents.

The annual summer league was instituted in 2012 in accordance with the company’s aim to provide an environment for holistic development in its belief that team sports develops character, accountability, dedication, and leadership, among many other traits.

DMCI Homes is the country’s first Quadruple A real estate developer known for building quality resort-style communities in Metro Manila, Baguio and Davao City. Each of its properties is built with world-standard craftsmanship borne from D.M. Consunji Inc.’s over 60 years of expertise in the construction and development industry.
