PSI sees bright future

WITHIN the next two years, authorities at the Philippine Sports Institute will see the fruits of their labor.

For now, their facilitators will be busy visiting the provinces in search of talented young athletes who are aged 14 years old and below.

“We will gather information in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and find out who will excel out of the testing and training,” said National Training Director Marc Edward Velasco.

By 2019, Velasco believes that these athletes that they have seen and tested will be more matured.

And by then, they will be ready to compete in high level competitions.

The group set up a training camp at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum in Palawan last week.

At that time, they subjected 50 potential children to a battery of physical and physical tests for profiling.

This week, they will be in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur for the Luzon leg.

They will be Marawi City, Lanao del Sur next week and then Laoag, Ilocos Norte  before the end of the month.

The PSI has tapped teachers from the Department of Education to measure the physical features of each participant.

That’s when they will develop the athletes who will be able to shine in international meets.

From there, the national sports associations can pick the talent from the pool of athletes nurtured by the PSI. And this will be based on their winning profiles.
