Batangas has been placed under a state of calamity.

This comes, following the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that struck Tingloy, Batangas at 8:58 pm on Tuesday.

The departments of accounting, budget and general services of the Provincial Capitol sustained some damage.

Local authorities estimate the cost of the destruction at about P 16 million.

The earthquake also destroyed a portion of Taal Basilica’s façade.

Inspection of structures across the province is ongoing.

Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas says, classes are still suspended in private and public schools.

“Pasalamat tayo sa Panginoon na kaunti lang ang damage (let us thank the Lord that the quake caused just minor damage),” he notes.

No one was reported injured in the tremor.

As of noon on Wednesday, 49 aftershocks have been recorded.

PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum allays any fears of tsunami, saying no such phenomenon will happen.

He explains, the movement of the quake was ‘horizontal’ and it won’t raise the waves in the sea.
