THE National Bureau of Investigation Wednesday said its operatives from the Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD), NBI Isabela District Office, and Dept. of Justice Office of Cybercrime have arrested a man for phishing.

This is an act of illegally obtaining sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details in an electronic communication.

The NBI identified the suspect as Christian Ian Salvador, a 22-year-old Computer Science student of Isabela State University, Cauayan Campus, arretsed on March 3, 2017.

On the strength of a search warrant issued by the Cybercrime Court of the Regional Trial Court of Manila, operatives raided the apartment of the suspect in Cauayan City, Isabela.

Salvador was arrested after being found violating the Cybercrime Prevention Act, Access Device Regulation Act, and Data Privacy Act.

Suspect had illegally obtained online banking username and password, personal information, and credit card information including card number, security code and expiration date of customers of a local bank. Suspect sent thousands of e-mails to various customers of the bank making it appear that the e-mails came from the bank itself.

In the said emails, victims were informed that due to security reasons, the bank was performing an update of its online banking database and therefore customers needed to update their bank information by clicking on a link.

The link then would take the customers to a fake website where they would input their online banking details as well as their credit card information.
