House probes alleged VIP treatment for NBP inmates

The House Committee on Justice is conducting an investigation into the alleged special treatment that high-profile New Bilibid Prison (NBP) inmates reportedly enjoy while they are detained at the Armed Forces Headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

In the hearing, AFP representative Colonel Ukol Paglala said, they are not privy to the internal affairs of the NBP Custodial Center.

Meanwhile, Justice Undersecretary Reynante Orceo said, he is not aware of any order supposedly from Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre that grants special privileges for the NBP inmates.

Orceo is referring to the memorandum reportedly given to Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Benjamin Delos Santos on December 9, 2016.

The memorandum was reportedly issued by BuCor Legal Office head Alvin Herrera Lim.

The letter was supposedly restoring the privileges for the inmates, after they testified against Senator Leila De Lima during the previous House hearings on the proliferation of illegal drugs in NBP.

Aguirre is absent in the proceeding.
