THE Department of Public Works and Highways has completed the rehabilitation of a mega flood-control structure in Leyte which expected to boost agricultural productivity of farmers, especially this rainy season.
Randy del Rosario, DPWH chief information officer, said agricultural lands, particularly those from Baybay City, are now protected against flood damages, with the completion of the P134-million rehabilitation and improvement of Dungcaan River Basin Flood Control Structure. ҬӬ
Flood-mitigating measures composed of dredging activities and reconstruction of concrete wall were implemented for prevention of flood waters from entering the southern sub-stream in Poblacion of Baybay. ҬӬ
Del Rosario said through the rehabilitation of Dungcaan River Basin, flooding will be mitigated and reduced in the area, hence, damages to fields, communities and infrastructure in the province during rainy days will be prevented. ҬӬ
In addition, DPWH has also completed two flood-mitigation projects in Leyte namely — the P112 million rehabilitation of flood control structures along Daguitan-Marabong River in Barangay Caridad in the town of Julita and the P9 million Tabgas flood control structure along Tabgas River in the town of Albuera. “¨”¨
Del Rosario said Leyte is surrounded by Camotes Sea and Leyte Gulf and usually visited by typhoons which make it more vulnerable to flood, affecting not only the agriculture industry but also the socio-economic activities and daily lives of its people. Agriculture is also one of the most important economic activities in the province.
