Councilors Week set in QC

Quezon City may become the permanent host of the annual Philippine Councilors Week celebrations, according to Councilor Godofredo Liban II, the president of the local chapter of the Philippine Councilors League.

In a statement, Liban said the city may build a convention center where local and national events may be held, including the yearly PCL gathering.

He revealed that there have been proposals for the construction of a convention center but the project was shelved. However, Mayor Herbert Bautista is still interested in pushing the project via a Private-Public-Partnership scheme, Liban said.

As Quezon City celebrates Philippine Councilors Week, its legislators pushed for the implementation of Bautista’s executive and legislative agenda.

Presidential Proclamation 212 issued by President Fidel Ramos declares the first week of September as Philippine Councilors’ Week.

Quezon City is one of the very few local government units spearheading the celebration, which its mayor said was an opportunity to bring government services closer to the people.

This year, the 36-member city council has lined up various projects and activities to highlight the weeklong celebration that will start on Monday.

The visiting councilors will tour the QC Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (Tahanan) in Barangay Payatas.

The city councilors will also host tree-planting activities, a photo exhibit and a food bazaar.

Councilor Lena Marie Juico is this year’s QC-PCL week celebration chairman.
