Manila Electric Co., the biggest electricity retailer, is set to implement next month an advanced distribution management system, or ADMS, a key building block toward a smarter and more automatic distribution network.
“This system will provide a great level of visibility of our network and will allow us, among other things, to minimize the impact of outages through re-routing power,” Meralco president Oscar Reyes said during a summit.
Reyes said Meralco was investing heavily in building new platforms for its nearly six million customers to interact digitally with the company and provide an enhanced level of customer service and experience.
Meralco is using technology to revolutionize the way it runs its business.
“Our Smart Grid journey will not be easy. It will require a new technology infrastructure to be built and millions of devices to be installed in the field. At the same time, we must meet the challenges of providing safe, reliable and the lowest possible cost power, and new services, to our ever-growing customer base which now counts nearly six million customer accounts,” Reyes said.
He said Meralco would work closely with stakeholders, regulators and policy makers and technology partners to upgrade the network “and ensure we are able to meet future demand and support the growth of the Philippines.”
“The evolution of our Smart Grid is a necessity to maintain a highly reliable network and respond to the coming challenges that distributed generation such as wind, solar or battery storage will have on our grid operations,” he said.
The Energy Regulatory commission earlier approved Meralco’s application to implement the ADMS costing P382.86 million. The system plans to reduce the risk posed by the current operating trouble management system and avoid the additional cost of maintaining an obsolete one.
