DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte sustained his lead over the other presidential contenders in the latest ABS-CBN Pre-Electoral National Survey conducted by Pulse Asia Research Inc.
A little over one in three registered voters expressed support for Duterte’s bid in the coming elections, Pulse Asia said on Sunday.
Peter Laviña, Duterte’s spokesman, said they were humbled by the mayor’s continuing rise in the surveys “in spite of all garbage thrown [at] him.”
Duterte enjoyed a 12-percentage-point lead over his nearest opponent, Senator Grace Poe, who had the backing of 22 percent of those polled.
Close behind were Vice President Jejomar Binay (19 percent) and former Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II (18 percent).
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago was the choice for president of only two percent of registered voters.
And only five percent were not inclined to elect any of these candidates as the country’s next president.
Based on a multistage probability sample of 4,000 registered voters 18 years old and above, with biometrics, Pulse Asia Research’s nationwide survey had a ± 1.5 percent margin of error at the 95 percent confidence level.
The subnational estimates for the geographic areas covered in the survey had the following error margins at 95 percent confidence level: ± 4.6 percent for Metro Manila, ± 2.3 percent for the rest of Luzon and ± 3.4 percent for the Visayas and ± 3.3 percent for Mindanao.
In keeping with Pulse Asia’s academic nature, no religious, political, economic, or partisan group influenced any of these processes.
Across geographic areas and socio-economic classes, Duterte had the lead in Metro Manila (43 percent), Mindanao (61 percent), and all socio-economic classes (33 percent to 47 percent).
In the rest of Luzon, the leading presidential bets were Poe (30 percent) and Binay (26 percent), while in the Visayas, Roxas (34 percent) shared the top spot with Duterte (28 percent).
With 32 percent of those polled naming her as their alternative candidate for president, Poe led her fellow presidential contenders in terms of second-choice voter preferences.
In second place was Binay (17 percent) while Roxas and Duterte occupied third place (both at 13 percent).
Santiago was named by 6 percent of those polled as their alternative choice for president in May 2016.
Almost two out of every 10 voters (19 percent) did not have a second choice for the post.
In practically all geographic areas (31 percent to 35 percent) and Classes D and E (27 percent to 33 percent), Poe led in terms of second-choice voter preferences.
On the other hand, in Metro Manila and in Class ABC, exactly the same percentage of registered voters (28 percent and 27 percent, respectively) either named Poe as their alternative presidential bet or did not identify a second-choice candidate.
