Aviation authority tells airmen: avoid Kanlaon

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has issued a notice to airmen advising flights that operate near the vicinity of the Kanlaon Volcano to avoid flying near the area.

The volcano had a steam explosion on Monday evening.

Kanlaon Volcano, located 30 kilometers southwest of Bacolod City in Negros Occidental, is the most active volcano in Central Philippines.

The notam took effect Tuesday at   11:29 a.m. and will last until   Wednesday at   1 p.m.

The notam was issued after the   Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has hoisted Alert Level 1 on Kanlaon Volcano.  Under Level 1, a volcano displays abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest.

Aircraft are advised to avoid the area as any substance from an eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.
