Revving towards sustainability: Toyota Motor Philippines powers manufacturing plant with 100% green energy

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) has taken a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality by signing a Retail Supply Contract (RSC) with a local supplier to provide green-backed electricity for its manufacturing operations. By doing so, TMP aims to achieve a 100% Renewable Energy (RE) ratio, with approximately 90% of its total electricity requirement being supplied by renewable sources. The remaining portion will come from an existing 1.46-megawatt rooftop solar power system on-site.

Team (Philippines) Energy Corporation, the chosen retail electricity supplier, will commence its supply to TMP on December 26, 2023. Under the RSC, each megawatt hour of electricity will be backed by an International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC), ensuring that it is sourced from a domestic renewable energy plant.

TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto emphasized that this transition to green energy will neutralize the company’s Scope 2 Emissions, specifically the indirect CO2 emissions from purchased electricity used in manufacturing operations. This development marks a significant milestone for TMP, positioning its automotive manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna, as a frontrunner in achieving a 100% RE ratio target for Toyota in the ASEAN region.

Looking ahead to 2035, TMP aims to decarbonize the remainder of its energy sources for manufacturing, particularly petrol-type generators, ovens, and boilers used in painting processes. This commitment aligns with Global Toyota’s target for all its manufacturing plants to be carbon-neutral by 2035, as part of the Toyota Environmental Challenge (TEC) 2050.

In its pursuit of carbon neutrality, Toyota not only focuses on expanding the availability of electrified vehicles but also on reducing the environmental impact of the entire automotive industry’s value chain through comprehensive life cycle actions. Toyota actively involves its supply chain, logistics, and dealer networks in decarbonization efforts.

Following TMP’s lead, local Toyota suppliers and dealers in the Philippines have implemented energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives to contribute to the TEC 2050 goals. Several companies, including Denso Ten Philippines Corporation, Hino Motors Philippines Corporation, Denso Philippines Corporation, and International Wiring Systems Philippines, have committed to achieving a 100% RE ratio. They have either invested in on-site solar power facilities or procured renewable energy through the Philippine government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). Toyota dealerships such as Toyota Global City, Toyota Mabolo City, and Toyota Pasong Tamo are also making efforts to achieve a 100% RE ratio.

In terms of environmental compliance, Toyota suppliers and established Toyota dealers nationwide, including Lexus Manila, are certified under ISO 14001. This certification is part of Toyota’s environmental management systems, which adhere to the Toyota Green Purchasing Guidelines and the Asia Pacific Eco-Dealership Program.
