For a gen X-er accustomed to concerts delivered somewhat the old way, a spectacle described as a “digital concert” may sound quite intriguing. Yes, we are exposed to this kind of modern watch for years now. Yet being reminded we have reached this far is all positive takeaway.

Thus, last Thursday night at the Mall of Asia Arena, Voyager Innovations marked the third anniversary of its free internet and rewards platform Freenet with one dubbed FREENIVERSAYA: A FREEnet Concert. To set the tone, “freenetizens” were given free and exclusive access to an evening of illuminating backdrops and all-out millennial stars.

Enjoying a digital concert
Mobile phone flash lights were on as Gloc-9 covered the Francis M. classic “Kaleidoscope World” during the digital Freenet concert held last Thursday (Sept. 20) at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.

With its atmosphere and soundscape boldly showcasing today’s trends in concert staging and experience, the event was another in-your-face proof that current live entertainment and digital revolution could transport spectators to places in a blink of an eye. Once mobile phones flash in the dark, it was as if stars from the sky have fallen magically right to your eye level.

“This was a spectacular opportunity for us to give our users a truly unique digital experience whether they were with us at the venue or tuned in at home via Facebook Live. We hope they had fun listening to their favorite artists and getting all the free perks,” said Dindo Marzan, Voyager’s Managing Director for Marketing Technologies.

The good-mix of performers clearly helped draw the large crowd in: KZ Tandingan, Moira Dela Torre, Shanti Dope, Gloc-9, Ben&Ben, and Hashtags. And then there’s Bamboo, loved by millennials.

Some of them likely relished getting crowd attention with unfailing hugot spiels hastened by emotive performances. Personally it was touching to see teary-eyed faces from the crowd and on stage. At one point millennials swayed brightly to a gen X anthem when Gloc 9 covered Francis M.’s “Kaleidoscope World.”

Talkin’ about a digital gathering with a lot of soul!

I fathomed that if those young souls chose that concert to take time off their personal troubles, they came to the right app, buddy.

Whereas emotions may have been running a bit difficult within, everything else is made digitally easy. In fact, freenetizens got concert passes by simply redeeming desired tickets in the freenet shop using freenet points collected over the past months.

Paying for food and drinks was also digitized through quick and easy cashless transactions care off PayMaya QR.

Heidi Garayblas, Voyager’s Associate Marketing Director, quipped, “I think it’s an understatement that we really went all out in giving exclusive perks and prizes to all freenetizens during our anniversary concert.”

With eight million users in the Philippines and counting, freenet is among the top free lifestyle apps and consistently trending in the same category on Google Play.

The Freeniversaya occasion was one way of driving in the point that a digital concert is not solely for millennials. It can be enjoyed by the not-so-young and the young at heart counting on state-of-the-art entertainment and embracing the idea that youth is identified by how it differs from past generations.
