Govt boosts EDSA Busway capacity

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is scaling up operations on the EDSA Busway to mitigate the impact of the EDSA rehabilitation on commuters.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the DOTr to ensure mobility of commuters using the busway while the rehabilitation works along portions of the highway are ongoing.

DOTr Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor said Secretary Giovanni Lopez had ordered EDSA bus operators to deploy more units to carry more commuters, while the MRT-3 has already deployed Dalian trains to increase the line’s carrying capacity especially during peak hours.

“We at DOTr are deploying more [bus] units so that our countrymen can ride faster,” Pastor said in a radio interview.

“We are also deploying Dalian Trains on the MRT-3 so that more passengers can ride the MRT-3,” he said.

At least 80 personnel from the DOTr-Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) have been deployed on a 24-hour shifting basis to assist the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel with traffic management, to help mitigate the effects of the EDSA rehabilitation, and also assist commuters using the EDSA Busway. SAICT personnel are also stationed at the MMDA Metrobase to monitor EDSA Busway operations for faster coordination and information relay.

“As part of our preventive measures or to mitigate the effects of the ongoing construction on EDSA, we have deployed personnel from the DOTr, particularly SAICT, to assist in traffic management,” Pastor said.

The DOTr official also reported that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have completed road reblocking and asphalt overlay works at the EDSA Buendia Station.

“As per the latest update [from DPWH], the overlay works have been fixed. Our station access to Buendia will also be restored. So we can now use the Buendia Busway Station. Our barriers are also being restored in the said area,” he said.

Pastor said construction on three new EDSA Busway stations—located in Cubao, Magallanes, and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX)—is set to begin next year. The expansion aims to boost the system’s efficiency and provide commuters with better accessibility.

He noted that the new EDSA Busway Kamuning Station would be inaugurated in the first quarter of 2026 as part of the busway’s modernization.

Pastor said the new Kamuning Station is equipped with elevators and escalators to improve accessibility for commuters especially for persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens and pregnant women.

The agency is also planning a new busway connecting España and Quezon Avenue, with the feasibility study expected to be completed by next year.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will be funding the study for the new busway system.

The EDSA Busway Project is a flagship initiative of the DOTr, supported by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). It aims to enhance mass transit efficiency, safety, and accessibility along EDSA, Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare.
