Parañaque City honors National Heroes Day with sacred flag disposal ceremony

As we celebrate National Heroes Day, do we know how to properly dispose of a worn-out Philippine flag? Throughout the year, many flags are displayed at various events, but few are aware of the ceremony dedicated to respectfully retiring them.

In a solemn event led by the City Government of Parañaque on August 28, the time-honored flag disposal ceremony was held. Councilor Maria Kristine ‘Tin’ Esplana, representatives from the Merville Park Homeowners Association, the Knights of Columbus, and local scout groups, among other organizations, participated in the program.

The flag was folded into a triangular shape and handed to “Inang Bayan,” symbolizing the nation. Accompanied by the patriotic song “Bayan Ko,” the flag was ceremonially burned.

After a brief funeral march, its ashes were buried near the statue of Dr. Jose Rizal, with a tombstone marking the spot. This act of reverence serves as a reminder of the deep respect we owe our flag and the heroes it represents.
