ROBINA, Gold Coast — The Philippine national women’s football team is bracing for what coach Mark Torcaso described as a “fight to the death” as the Filipinas chase their first victory in the group stage of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
Facing the South Korean Taeguk Ladies at 11 a.m. Thursday (Manila time) at the Cbus Super Stadium, the Filipinas aim to bounce back from a narrow 0-1 defeat to the Australia women’s national soccer team last Sunday.
“There’s no scoring target. We just want to perform well. Our girls will fight to the death, and I think the result will take care of itself if we do that,” Torcaso said during Wednesday’s pre-match press conference.
South Korea enters the clash brimming with confidence after a dominant 3-0 victory over Iran, placing them level atop Group A with Australia.
The Taeguk Ladies’ strong start has given coach Shin Sang-woo optimism heading into the showdown.
“I think my players are now better adjusted to the field and tournament conditions, so I expect a better match tomorrow,” said Shin. “Every team deserves respect. The Philippines are very strong opponents. As we analyzed them, they are well organized in defense and good at counter-attacking.”
While the Matildas, under coach Joe Montemurro, prepare to take on winless Iran later in the day, the spotlight remains on the crucial Philippines-Korea encounter.
“South Korea is probably the strongest team in the competition. We’re looking forward to the challenge,” Torcaso added, as the Filipinas seek to keep their campaign alive.
