Ombudsman taps NBI to probe Baligod 18 claims

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been tapped by the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate the claims made by 18 former soldiers working with lawyer Levi Baligod, according to NBI Director Melvin Matibag on Wednesday.

“We were deputized last Monday by the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate tungkol doon sa (the statements of the) 18 marines. We already conducted the initial investigation,” he said.

Matibag clarified that the allegations must first be studied during the investigation process.

“If the evidence will warrant that we should investigate iyong mga binanggit (what they said), then we will investigate them, but initially mayroon tayong mga nakikita na na anggulo (we are already looking at an angle),” he explained.

Meanwhile, the NBI chief said they will reach out to the former soldiers, noting that they should give statements individually.

He added that they will also look into the relationship of the affidavit’s notary public to the soldiers.

Matibag expressed support for Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla’s stance stressing that they will follow where the evidence leads them.
