Health Secretary Ted Herbosa on Monday led inspections at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute and the Philippine Heart Center to assess hospital readiness for the Yuletide season.
The visits formed part of the government’s Ligtas Christmas Hospital Rounds 2025, a nationwide effort to ensure uninterrupted emergency medical services during peak holiday demand.
Health officials reviewed staffing levels, emergency room capacity, equipment availability, and referral systems to confirm that critical services can handle an expected surge in patients.
The inspection prioritized preparedness for noncommunicable diseases, including acute coronary syndrome, stroke, and bronchial asthma, which historically rise during holiday periods.
They also examined hospital protocols for managing road traffic injuries and trauma linked to fireworks use, both of which commonly increase during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
During a press conference, the Department of Health (DOH) chief emphasized that lifestyle choices during the holidays significantly influence health outcomes, urging moderation in food intake, alcohol consumption, and late-night activities.
“It’s all about healthy choices. Let’s take care of our bodies,” Herbosa advised.
Beyond hospital readiness, the campaign seeks to raise public awareness on preventing injuries and illnesses that strain emergency services during the festive season.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization Philippines reminded the public that respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza, and measles remain a concern during holiday gatherings.
It advised simple protective measures, including proper cough etiquette, frequent handwashing, staying home when unwell, and keeping vaccinations up to date.
