Adiong: First impeach-PBBM rap ‘dead on arrival’

The impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is weak, unsupported by credible evidence, and unlikely to prosper in the House of Representatives, House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms chair Zia Alonto Adiong said.

Describing the complaint as “dead on arrival,” Adiong said impeachment, as Congress’ most serious constitutional power, should not be used as a political weapon or publicity tool.

“Impeachment is the heaviest constitutional weapon available to Congress. It cannot—and must not—be wielded on the basis of recycled accusations, hearsay, or purely political grievances,” he said.

“In stark contrast, the accusations directed at President Marcos Jr. rely almost entirely on long-standing claims from vocal critics—claims that have already been repeatedly aired in public without producing new, verifiable evidence capable of withstanding constitutional muster,” Adiong said.

The lawmaker said the complaint appears intended more for media attention than constitutional scrutiny, noting that the accusations rely on long-standing claims repeatedly raised by critics without new or verifiable evidence.

He pointed out that there has been no House investigation, no subpoenaed documents, and no proof presented to support the allegations.

“This is politics dressed up as impeachment, and it will not succeed,” Adiong said.

He stressed that impeachment articles must allege and substantiate at least one of the impeachable offenses under the 1987 Constitution, adding that vague assertions and political dissatisfaction do not meet that standard.

Adiong said House leaders are committed to due process and the responsible exercise of impeachment powers.

“The Filipino people deserve governance focused on results, not endless political spectacle,” he said.
