Groups rally at SC seeking reversal of impeachment ruling

Various groups staged protest actions Tuesday morning in front of the Supreme Court (SC) building in Manila, urging justices to reverse their earlier decision, which rendered the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte unconstitutional.

The High Tribunal is currently holding its en banc session after several motions for reconsideration were filed with respect to its ruling on the impeachment case against the vice president.

On Monday, August 11, the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) joined demonstrations held at St. Joseph’s College in Quezon City, calling for the reversal of the Court’s initial decision and urging it to grant the pending motions aimed at reviving the case in the Senate.

PAHRA Secretary-General Egay Cabalitan emphasized the urgency of the demand, saying it would not allow the process of accountability to be set aside just like that. “The people deserve leaders who are accountable to the law, not above it,” he said in a news release.

Participants from various civil society groups joined the protest, holding placards and chanting slogans for justice, truth, and accountability.

PAHRA reiterated its unwavering commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Filipino people in the fight for truth, justice, and accountability, from the very first call for redress until the last step toward securing it.

The alliance stressed that leaders who hide behind power and avoid responsibility must not be allowed to escape the consequences of their actions.
