Tulfo renews push for Media Workers’ Magna Carta

The push for the immediate passage of the Media Workers’ Magna Carta was renewed on Sunday by Senator Erwin Tulfo following a recent shootout at the Senate building.

Tulfo said the incident highlighted the dangers and lack of protection faced by journalists, noting that some reporters were traumatized while covering the shooting live.

The broadcaster-turned-lawmaker said authorities should have allowed reporters and camera operators to document the incident, adding that media coverage helps ensure security forces follow proper protocols and discourages further violence.

Tulfo said the proposed measure is not only about improving economic conditions for journalists but also about affirming their dignity and protecting press freedom.

He urged lawmakers to pass Senate Bill No. 249, which seeks to provide standard wages, overtime pay, night differential, security of tenure, hazard allowances, and insurance benefits for media workers.
