National Security Adviser Eduardo Año reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to a rules-based international order as the country prepares to mark the 10th anniversary of the South China Sea Arbitral Award on July 12.
In a statement, Año said the ruling remains a “clear and binding affirmation” of the country’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
He described the award as both a legal and moral anchor guiding Philippine policies and actions.
The National Security Adviser emphasized the role of dialogue and diplomacy in managing tensions, citing mechanisms such as the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism, but stressed that all engagements are anchored on international law.
He underscored that the arbitral ruling is “final and non-negotiable.”
Año also highlighted the government’s whole-of-nation approach, combining diplomacy, national resilience and strengthened partnerships with like-minded countries to protect the country’s maritime entitlements.
“The Arbitral Award is not only a legal victory but a reaffirmation of our enduring commitment to assert and defend what is rightfully ours through lawful and peaceful means,” Año said.
