DepEd to promote Filipino literature to boost literacy

The Department of Education said that it will strengthen the promotion of Filipino literature as part of its campaign for increased literacy.

During the opening of a book fair in Pasig City, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said despite modern technologies, books remain important in today’s times.

“We remain invested in what continues to matter- encouraging our learners to strengthen their literacy through books,” Angara said.

At least 93.1 percent of Filipinos aged 10 to 64 remain capable of performing foundational literacy skills, such as reading, according to a study released in 2025.

As such, the agency has intensified its campaign to procure more textbooks and acquire new titles for students across the country.

Some P19.5 billion has been allocated by the DepEd to achieve a 1:1 student-to-textbook ratio, along with Early Procurement Activities (EPA) to help quicken delivery.

On the other hand, P206.571 million will be spent by the National Book Development Board, an attached agency of the DepEd, to help support authors and publishers.

Angara, along with DepEd, took part in NBDB’s book fair which will open engagement spaces for authors and the reading public until Sunday (March 15).
