The Philippine and Malaysian governments reached a milestone in their aviation partnership with the successful conclusion of a two-day bilateral negotiation in Putrajaya from March 4 to 5.
Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines chief information officer Eric Apolonio said the agreement modernizes the 1978 Air Services Agreement to reflect current travel realities, including revised airline designation rules under the Public Service Act.
Airlines are now recognized by their principal place of business rather than traditional ownership requirements, allowing more carriers to operate routes between the two countries and enhancing competition that could lead to more options and lower fares.
The renewed aviation partnership is also expected to expand joint ventures and codesharing while boosting tourism, economic growth, and people-to-people ties between the Philippines and Malaysia.
