Thousands expected at EDSA 40 prayer march

Organizers of Wednesday’s prayer march marking the 40th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution said they expect between 20,000 and 30,000 participants to join the commemorative activity.

The event began in the morning at the EDSA Shrine, where participants gathered for a rosary prayer before marching toward the People Power Monument along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).

Civil society groups carried placards calling for accountability and an end to corruption.

Among the groups expected to attend are Tindig Pilipinas, Union Theological Seminary, Akbayan Partylist, Partido Manggagawa, and People Power Volunteers for Reform.

Tindig Pilipinas co-convenor Francisco “Kiko” Aquino Dee said the activity forms part of a series of events organized by the Trillion Peso March Movement.

Although the date was declared a working holiday, Dee said organizers aim to match the turnout of the Nov. 30 Trillion Peso March, which drew an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 participants.

He added that the Wednesday protests carry the same anti-corruption call raised during previous rallies held on Sept. 21 and Nov. 30, urging accountability for officials involved in alleged irregularities.

“Although there are some big fish who appear to have been jailed or may soon be jailed, there are also those who continue to slip through, so we really need to press the call that all corrupt officials must be held accountable,” Dee said.

Security deployment for the commemoration, led by the Quezon City Police District, includes over 1,100 police officers augmented by more than 1,600 force multipliers from the Quezon City Local Government Unit.
