DPWH officials in Pampanga relieved for alleged extortion

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon on Friday relieved several officials from the Pampanga Second District Engineering Office over reports that they allegedly solicited commissions from contractors involved in infrastructure projects.

The Public Works Secretary said the officials were removed pending investigation to ensure transparency and prevent interference in the probe.

He said that the department will pursue administrative and criminal charges against those found responsible.

Dizon inspected a collapsed flood control dike in Barangay Candating, Arayat, Pampanga, following complaints from residents about safety risks and possible construction lapses.

The DPWH chief, however, declined to name the officials involved pending investigation.

He has since ordered a technical assessment of the project, including a review of its design and construction, warning that engineers and contractors accountable for any violations will face sanctions as part of the DPWH’s continuing anti-corruption drive.
