The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Madrid and the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, announced on Thursday that no Filipinos have been reported involved in the recent train incidents in Spain.
In a statement, the DFA confirmed that its posts in Spain are closely coordinating with Spanish authorities and train operators following two separate train incidents: one near Barcelona and another in Adamuz.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine Embassy in Madrid and the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, is closely coordinating with Spanish authorities and train operators following two recent train incidents in Spain,” the statement read.
The DFA reported that the Philippine Embassy in Madrid has verified that no Filipinos were among those injured or killed in the collision of two trains in Adamuz, Cordoba.
Additionally, the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona stated that, at this time, there is no confirmed information regarding Filipino nationals affected by the train crash near Barcelona.
Both the Embassy and the Consulate General have pledged to assist any Filipino nationals who may be affected by these incidents.
On Sunday, January 18, reports indicated that a high-speed train derailed and collided with another oncoming train in southern Spain.
This collision caused the second train to be pushed off the tracks and down an embankment, resulting in 43 fatalities and 152 injuries.
On Tuesday, a commuter passenger train derailed in Gelida, near Barcelona, leading to the death of the driver and injuring 37 people.
