Sen. Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian on Tuesday urged the expansion of the Voucher Program to cover Kindergarten and Grade 6 students in private schools.
Under the senator’s proposal, only a single voucher system would provide financial assistance to students in private schools.
The plan aims to ease overcrowding in public schools by directing more support to private institutions.
“We will help private schools, but the benefits should go directly to the students who need them most,” Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, said.
Priority under the proposed system would be given to students with the greatest need, including graduates of the Alternative Learning System.
Gatchalian earlier filed the Government Assistance to Private Basic Education Act, or Senate Bill 364, to address gaps in existing programs like the Senior High School Voucher Program and Educational Service Contracting.
