Navy to acquire soon another patrol vessel

The Philippine Navy (PN anticipates arrival of a new Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) in the first quarter of 2026, marking another milestone in the country’s continuing military modernization program.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy (PN) on Sunday reported that its patrol vessel, BRP Alberto Navarette (PC-394), successfully carried out a maritime patrol along the northeastern coast of Mindanao from January 2 to 3.

According to the Navy, the delivery of the OPV was part of a broader capability upgrade scheduled for 2026, which also included the acquisition of a third Tarlac-class Landing Dock Vessel (LDV). These assets were meant to significantly strengthen the Navy’s maritime security operations and expand its operational reach across the country’s vast territorial waters.

“By 2026, the Philippine Navy expects the delivery of the 3rd Tarlac Class Landing Dock Vessel, along with Offshore Patrol Vessels, which will further enhance maritime security efforts and extend its operational reach,” Philippine Navy spokesperson Capt. Marissa Martinez told Manila Standard.

She explained that OPVs were primarily designed for maritime security and surveillance missions. The vessels were designed to enhance the Navy’s ability to maintain a persistent presence and ensure continuous monitoring across the Philippines’ extensive maritime zones.

“OPVs are usually focused on maritime security and surveillance. They significantly enhance the Philippine Navy’s ability to maintain persistent presence and continuous coverage across the country’s vast maritime zones,” Martinez said.

She added, however, that no specific naval unit has yet been designated to receive the incoming OPV. This is because the vessel must still undergo the required final acceptance procedures, including administrative and technical processes and tests, in accordance with government procurement laws, before its formal transfer to the Philippine Navy.

The acquisition of the OPV forms part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ modernization program, aimed at improving defense capabilities, safeguarding national sovereignty, and ensuring maritime safety and security amid evolving regional challenges.

In a statement, the Navy said BRP Alberto Navarette, under the operational control of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, patrolled the vicinity of Butuan Bay, Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Island, Socorro Island, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, and nearby approaches.

“The maritime patrol was conducted in support of the ongoing security operations to safeguard the Eastern Mindanao seaboard and ensure the safety and security of vital sea lanes within the area of responsibility,” the Navy said.

The operation focused on enhancing maritime domain awareness, sustaining naval presence, and monitoring maritime activities in key coastal and offshore areas.

The Navy also said the patrol was conducted to secure the Eastern Mindanao seaboard, considered a strategically significant maritime corridor linking the Pacific seaboard to internal waters and supporting economic activities such as fishing, trade, and inter-island transport.

“Given its strategic importance, sustained maritime patrols are essential to deter illegal fishing, smuggling, and other maritime security threats that may undermine regional stability,” according to the statement.

It highlighted that the operation demonstrated the PN’s commitment to maintaining peace, security, and a government presence in the maritime domain.

“Likewise, it further underscores the PN’s continued resolve to protect national interests and uphold maritime security along the Eastern Mindanao seaboard,” it added.
