DFA rejects premature Bondi Beach attack links to Philippines

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday urged restraint and accuracy in reporting following local and foreign media reports linking the Philippines to the Bondi Beach incident in Sydney, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing and facts have yet to be fully established.

In a statement, the DFA said it has taken note of the reports and underscored the importance of allowing competent authorities to complete their investigations before drawing conclusions, particularly on matters that could mischaracterize the Philippines’ security situation.

“The Philippine government is in close coordination with Australian authorities through existing bilateral mechanisms to verify information related to the matter,” the DFA said, citing established security and law enforcement cooperation between the two countries.

The department also called on media organizations to ensure accuracy, balance and proper context in their coverage, warning against sweeping generalizations and speculation that could spread misinformation or inflame prejudice.

The DFA said the Philippines has made significant strides in improving its domestic security environment to promote peace and order and support socio-economic development nationwide.

It reiterated the country’s commitment to regional and international efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism, including sustained information sharing, law enforcement collaboration and border security cooperation with Australia and other partner countries.

According to reports, the two suspects traveled to Davao City in November before flying to Australia.

Authorities in Australia continue to investigate the Bondi Beach incident which resulted in the death of 15 individuals.
