Tuguegarao City, Cagayan – Based on the assessment of the Department of Agriculture, Super Typhoon ‘Nando’ seriously ruined Cagayan Valley’s agriculture industry, causing damages estimated to be over ₱597 million.
Rice crops were the most severely affected with over 11,000 hectares of farmlands experiencing output losses of ₱424 million, of which 3,122 hectares were declared irrecoverable, according to Regional Executive Director Rose Mary Aquino.
Corn accounted for the majority of the ₱117 million in crop losses. Further, livestock losses totaled ₱301,000, and damages to high-value fruits and vegetables totaled ₱1.1 million. Damage to agricultural infrastructure and equipment was valued at ₱640,000.
Cagayan was the most affected province in terms of agricultural value with ₱324 million in losses to rice crops, followed by Isabela with ₱121 million.
Recent typhoons have severely damaged Cagayan after four typhoons pounded Northern Luzon with agricultural losses pegged at ₱1.4 billion in total.
Affected farmers are receiving aid from the provincial government, and the president has assured continued support.
