President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday vowed to intensify government efforts against online gambling, warning that it preys on vulnerable Filipinos and threatens the integrity of the country’s financial system.
Speaking at the Manila Tech Summit 2025, President Marcos said the government has already taken initial steps, including suspending in-app gambling features on mobile payment platforms and websites.
“There is also the growing problem of online gambling, which preys on our people’s vulnerabilities,” he said.
“We are addressing this through initial measures, such as suspending the in-app gambling access in mobile payment apps and websites. This way, we can help protect our citizens and preserve the integrity of our financial system,” the president added.
President Marcos underscored the risks posed by digital platforms, noting that while technology fuels innovation, it can also be exploited for harm.
“We must also recognize that progress comes with challenges. Any powerful tool cuts both ways. In this digital age, we must become more vigilant against the risks that come with it,” he said.
“This is why we must also strengthen our defenses, manage risks, and block malicious attempts before they harm our people,” he added.
Consumer groups and regulators have raised alarms over the rapid spread of online gambling in the Philippines, saying it contributes to financial instability, addiction, and fraud.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) earlier ordered the removal of gambling options within digital wallets and payment platforms, citing rising risks to consumers.
“Suspended in-app gambling access includes any product, service, or feature that redirects an account holder to a gaming or gambling site,” BSP said in a statement.
“The BSP directive is issued in light of the surge in online gambling transactions and its impact on the financial health of consumers and their families, and considering the broader social cost. The suspension will remain in place until the BSP finalizes the policy on online gambling payment services,” it added.
