DOH issues reminders for Filipinos observing Lent

The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday reminded the public to prioritize safety on the road and guard against foodborne and heat-related illnesses.

“Be cautious of the effects of extreme heat, which can lead to heat stroke and the rapid spoilage of food, potentially causing food poisoning,” the agency said in a statement.

During Lent in 2024, the department recorded 122 cases of foodborne illnesses, prompting this year’s stronger advisory.

To ensure readiness, the DOH placed all public hospitals and health facilities under Code White Alert from April 13 to 20.

Code White Alert requires all emergency and critical care personnel to be on standby for a possible surge in patients.

Alongside health warnings, the DOH urged motorists to be cautious as roads are expected to be busier due to the long Holy Week break.

From March 24 to 31 last year, the DOH documented 631 traffic-related injuries, most of which involved drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts or helmets.

The DOH also reminded the faithful to practice their Holy Week traditions safely, especially those participating in the Senakulo and other forms of religious penance.

Senakulo is a theatrical reenactment of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, performed in many communities during Holy Week.

While it is a long-standing tradition in the Philippines, some participants go as far as self-flagellation or even crucifixion to show devotion.

The DOH cautioned that these acts could lead to severe injuries such as fractures, tetanus, and serious infections, especially if wounds are not properly treated.

The Catholic Church has also clarified that extreme forms of self-punishment are not necessary expressions of faith.

Instead, the DOH encouraged Filipinos to observe Holy Week through prayer, reflection, and acts of kindness rather than physical harm.
