ILOILO—In the wake of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. emphasized the importance of due process and adherence to international law.
“As a lawyer, I understand that international law is part of our legal system, so we have to let due process take its course,” Defensor said.
While acknowledging the public’s strong reactions to the arrest, the governor said the country faces more pressing concerns that require government attention.
“There are bigger threats and challenges that the Philippines must focus on,” he said, citing rising dengue cases, extreme heat, and food security among Iloilo’s local priorities.
Defensor also reassured the public that the country remains a safe destination for tourists, dismissing concerns that Duterte’s arrest could affect national security or stability.
He urged both Duterte’s supporters and critics to exercise their rights responsibly, ensuring that public demonstrations do not disrupt traffic, daily activities, or the peace and order situation.
Additionally, the governor warned against the spread of misinformation, advising the public to verify news sources before sharing content on social media.
