The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is planning an integrated biodiversity research expedition to Recto Bank and Rizal Reef in April, following a similar project in Pag-asa Island earlier this year.

This initiative aims to further understand and protect the West Philippine Sea’s rich biodiversity, which is vital for the country’s fisheries and coral reefs but is increasingly threatened.

To enhance its research capabilities, the DENR will establish a marine scientific research station on Pag-asa Island, part of a network of eight stations across the Philippines. These stations will facilitate collaboration with international scientists from nations that respect international law, particularly in ocean science and maritime security.

The DENR highlighted its partnership with Australia in developing expertise in these areas.

During a maritime security forum, Australia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Philippines in maritime security and protection. They emphasized the need for gender equality in the maritime domain, stressing that inclusive cooperation is crucial for addressing complex maritime challenges.

The forum also underscored the importance of collaboration with allies like Australia in safeguarding the Philippines’ sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
