The Department of National Defense (DND) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty while outlining modernization goals for 2025 during their annual New Year’s Call on Friday, January 3, at Camp Aguinaldo.
DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, Jr. led the event, urging defense and military personnel to remain steadfast in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and upholding humanitarian values.
Reflecting on the overall theme of resilience and unity, Teodoro said they must “not allow the Philippines to be subjected to any distortions in narratives or momentum.”
“Every life is precious, and ‘no one left behind’ is our commitment—not only to our people but also to our international partners,” Teodoro said.
He also thanked the country’s foreign allies for supporting the Philippines’ rights under international law, highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving national security objectives.
AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. outlined the military’s priorities for the year, including armed forces modernization, enhanced defense capabilities, and a stronger presence in strategic areas.
“We will enhance our naval, aerial, ground, air defense, and cyber capabilities to protect our resources and ensure the security of our waters, always adhering to international law,” Brawner said.
The traditional New Year’s Call brought together DND and AFP officials, foreign military attachés, officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian staff to reflect on their accomplishments and align their goals for the year ahead.
Teodoro, speaking on behalf of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., thanked the attendees for their contributions to the nation’s defense and security. The event underscored the strong camaraderie and shared commitment of the DND and AFP in serving and protecting the Republic of the Philippines.
