Airports tighten security measures amid holiday rush

Airport authorities increased security measures nationwide in anticipation of a higher number of passengers during the Christmas holiday season.

This move follows Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista’s directive to ensure the safety, security, reliability, and comfort of passengers traveling during this busy time.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) expressed its commitment to providing safe, efficient, and comfortable travel experiences across the 44 airports under its jurisdiction.

The agency has assured full operational readiness of its Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems.

Comprehensive contingency measures have also been established to address potential flight disruptions and to ensure smooth airport operations amid the influx of travelers.

“CAAP recognizes the importance of a stress-free travel experience during the holiday season. By ensuring the reliability of our systems and the readiness of our facilities, we aim to deliver smooth and safe journeys for all passengers,” stated CAAP Director General Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo.

CAAP is collaborating closely with airline operators and other government agencies to maintain efficient airport operations and enhance passenger satisfaction.

In a related effort, Office for Transport Security (OTS) Administrator Undersecretary Crizaldo Nieves directed auditors across civil aviation, maritime, road, and rail sectors to inspect various transportation hubs.

This initiative aims to monitor the effective implementation of security plans and programs by all stakeholders.

He has also ordered personnel to conduct threat and vulnerability assessments while ensuring the 24/7 operation of the Transport Security Operations Center.

Additionally, all leave requests for OTS Security Screening Officers have been canceled in anticipation of the expected increase in passenger volume during the Christmas season.

“I have requested the cancellation of all Security Screening Officers’ leaves. We are also activating a 24/7 monitoring team to address any incidents at transport facilities nationwide and to ensure swift coordination with the appropriate authorities,” Nieves said.

The OTS chief urged the public to cooperate with security procedures and advised passengers to personally inspect their baggage for prohibited items before arriving at airports, seaports, bus terminals, and rail stations to avoid any inconveniences.

“Let me remind all passengers traveling this holiday season to check the OTS List of Prohibited Items and pack your bags wisely to be aware of their contents,” he added.
