THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed two flood control projects in Negros Oriental and La Union as part of the government’s effort to strengthen flood management of more vulnerable areas in the country.
The combined infrastructure projects, worth more than P164.61 million, will mitigate floods in areas often affected by flooding during heavy rains, causing damage to agricultural and private property.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the one-kilometer flood control will enhance the community’s resilience to flooding and protect local livelihoods.
The completed project, costing P71.54-million, was funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA) and now serves as a crucial element in the long-term economic stability of Manjuyod.
Meanwhile, the construction of the 497.42-meter-long flood mitigation project along the Maragayap River in the town of Bacnotan, La Union was also completed, including the construction of a concrete revetment, and grouted riprap with steel sheet piles to ensure the quality of the infrastructure.
The construction of the slope protection was implemented along the river’s portion in the agricultural Barangays of Guinabang and Calautit.
Costing P82.97-million, the project also includes the construction of a concrete, revetment, and grouted riprap with steel sheet piles to ensure the quality of the infrastructure.
The flood control structure along the Maragayap riverbank now ensures the safety of the local residents, reducing the risk of damage to their property and livelihood against the destructive impact of heavy rainfalls.
