The Philippine Army strongly condemned the recent attack by communist group New People’s Army (NPA) on soldiers providing relief assistance to storm-hit areas in Albay, calling the act “reckless” and “compassionless.”
The incident, which took place in Barangay Matanglad, Pio Duran, left one soldier injured by an anti-personnel mine.
According to Major Frank Roldan, spokesperson for the 9th Infantry Division (9ID), the attack demonstrated the NPA’s disregard for communities in desperate need in the wake of severe tropical storm ‘Kristine.’
Roldan urged the public to support the Army’s efforts by reporting any information on armed groups threatening local security.
Philippine Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala echoed the condemnation. He emphasized that the attack on members of the 49th Infantry Battalion, who were delivering critical supplies to isolated areas, showed the communists’ blatant disregard for the safety and welfare of vulnerable families.
Despite the assault, Dema-ala affirmed that the Philippine Army remains committed to delivering aid and supporting President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s directive to establish a steady “conveyor belt of aid” for affected communities.
Dema-ala also encouraged residents to report any threats from armed groups to ensure the safety of relief workers and the swift recovery of calamity-stricken areas.
The 9ID assured residents of continued support, particularly for communities like Pio Duran, which remains isolated due to road and bridge damage caused by flooding.
