The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) discourages candidates in the upcoming midterm elections from campaigning at cemeteries during Undas (All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day).
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) also asked members of the public going to cemeteries to observe and monitor political aspirants who would take advantage of the annual observance.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said that instead of campaigning, aspirants should assist in maintaining peace and order in the area, particularly in cemeteries, and participate in cleaning activities.
Artes also highlighted that in the era of social media, if people see candidates campaigning at cemeteries, it may lead to negative reactions and backfire on the candidates.
When asked about politicians with banners and streamers at the entrance of cemeteries, Artes said it is allowed as long as they comply with local government ordinances. Setting up tents and providing water is also permitted, provided it does not obstruct traffic or the movement of people and vehicles.
Comelec has announced that the campaign period for senatorial candidates and party-list groups will be from February 11 to March 10, 2025.
Meanwhile, the campaign period for candidates for the House of Representatives and provincial, city, and municipal posts will be from March 28 to May 10, 2025.
