“K-pop is not just a genre of music. It is a total package of music, dance, performance, storytelling, and even social media. K-pop’s success came from respecting diversity and embracing world cultures while holding onto Korea’s unique identity,” said RM.

The 31-year-old artist likened K-pop to bibimbap, describing it as a mix of global influences that maintain their individuality while creating something new. He also urged world leaders to fund the cultural sector.

“When you think about investing in tomorrow’s generations, think about culture as well as economics. Culture and art are a powerful force that moves hearts. They are the fastest messengers that carry diversity and resonance. As the leaders of APEC, your policies and support will be the canvas and playground for all creators,” he continued.

RM’s presentation, titled “Cultural and Creative Industries in the APEC Region and the Soft Power of K-culture,” marked the first time a K-pop artist has spoken at the APEC CEO Summit.

The event gathers government and business leaders from 21 member economies.
