Punch, a baby macaque that went viral online after being abandoned by its mother, continues to draw a crowd at a zoo near Tokyo.
The six-month-old macaque became an internet sensation after videos showed him clinging to zookeepers and carrying a stuffed orangutan toy. The clips circulated widely on social media, prompting public support and the hashtag #HangInTherePunch.
According to Japanese media reports said Punch’s mother did not take care of him after birth, possibly because it was her first time or due to physical strain. Normally, baby macaques depend on their mothers for safety and early development.
Zoo staff tried giving him towels and other soft items, but Punch preferred a long-limbed stuffed toy that was easier for him to hold.
After being raised by caretakers since he was born in July, Punch has started joining his group. The zoo said he has begun interacting with other monkeys, though he is sometimes scolded as part of normal behavior.
More than 100 visitors came to see Punch, cheering him on as he tried to approach others. The zoo asked the public to give him space while he continues to adjust.
