The quiet return of thoughtful gifting

Some holiday shoppers are skipping the usual mall rush this year, not because they’re spending less but because they’re becoming more intentional.

The search for presents is shifting away from whatever’s trendy and toward something that feels thoughtful. And for many, that means choosing something local.

That shift in mindset is easy to notice at Kultura’s Himig ng Pasko Christmas Market, which is currently in full swing at the Main Mall Atrium of SM Mall of Asia and runs until Nov. 23.

Filipino-designed everyday wear reinforces the shift toward gifts that tell a story rather than follow a trend

The week-long event, co-presented by Mastercard, places Filipino-made pieces at the center of the holiday scene—handwoven apparel, pearl jewelry, artisan chocolates, plant-based beauty, and home products—showcasing the kind of gifts that carry stories rather than just price tags.

For the small businesses and independent creatives behind these booths, the season is the biggest chance of the year to introduce their craft to new shoppers. Kultura leans into that energy by creating a space where shoppers can meet the makers rather than just browse the merchandise.

Mastercard country manager for the Philippines Jason Crasto acknowledged that noble endeavor, pointing out that Kultura has always put Filipino creativity at the forefront.

“Kultura has always celebrated Filipino craftsmanship, creativity, and heritage,” he said, adding that visitors will “find the magic in every corner” as they walk through the market.

The space also feels more like a celebration than a bazaar. Live music from rising OPM acts continues throughout the week, and there’s even a vinyl listening booth for shoppers who browse better with retro OPM holiday tracks in the background.

For anyone thinking of dropping by, it’s less about buying a lot and more about finding something that feels right for the person you’re gifting.
