Balanga City, Bataan—Vice Governor Cris Garcia recently led the orientation of 72 teachers in the province as recipients of this year “Gurong Iskolar ng Bataan” program.

“Sixty-six teachers were awarded scholarships for masteral degrees and six for doctoral degrees,” said Bataan scholarship coordinator Ramon Canas, who was also present during the orientation held last week at the DepEd Building in the capitol compound.

“You cannot teach what you do not know. The continuing study will broaden your knowledge and further improve your teaching skills,” Canas quoted Garcia as saying to teachers during the orientation.

Before becoming vice governor, Garcia was the original coordinator of the Iskolar ng Bataan and Gurong Iskolar ng Bataan. She now serves as adviser of the program.

The Gurong Iskolar ng Bataan has 171 masteral degree and 41 doctoral degree beneficiaries so far, plus the new recipients for school year 2019-2020.

Gurong Iskolar ng Bataan is a scholarship program of the provincial government in a tie-up with Bataan Peninsula State University for teachers in the province.

Their tuition fee is paid by the provincial government, while the miscellaneous fee is shouldered by the university.

The late Gov. Tet Garcia hatched the scholarship for teachers in 2005, a year after he and current Gov. Abet Garcia, then a congressman, started the Iskolar ng Bataan for college students.
