While conducting search and rescue operations for missing passengers of ill-starred MV Trisha Kirsten in Basilan waters, the Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Tubbataha receives a distressed call from another ferry, the MLAS Express 2 which encountered technical problems and drifted into shallow waters. The PCG ship eventually accommodates 128 of the ferry’s 225 passengers, while the rest remained in the distressed boat along with 15 crews. The PCG comes back to the site and towed the ferry to safety at the Port of Zamboanga City.
